Picán Royale Bourbon Society Kicks Off
When Picán in Oakland opened up back in 2009, it was pioneering the Southern-cuisine-with-a-twist movement, but it was also one of the only bars with a big focus on bourbon and rye whiskies. With a sizable collection of whiskey on its bar, including some rare and custom bottles, restaurant owner Michael LeBlanc and bar manager Sam Babalola are launching a new program bourbon fans: The Royale Bourbon Society.

If you're into bourbon and rye whiskey, the idea is a little like Blue Agave Club at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant or the Rumbustion Society at Smuggler's, except that you don't need to finish tastings to get access to special spirits. There is, however a $50 annual fee, and while many of the Royale Bourbon Society's events are open to the public, as a member you get preferred access (tastes sweeter than whiskey), exclusive tastings, discounts on events, educational seminars, and some free events.
The Bourbon Room private dining room will serve as clubhouse for some of the events, a cozy nook that transports you to New Orleans with plantation doors and window shutters from the Big Easy and a private sidewalk patio area. Initiating the group will be the first in the "Bourbon Masters Series" with a 4-course menu created by Executive Chef Sophie Uong, featuring bourbon pairings using Angel's Envy Bourbon. Master distiller Lincoln Henderson will be on site to discuss his latest project and his history in the bourbon business. The formerly retired master distiller for the Brown-Forman Corporation, Henderson is the Carroll Shelby of the bourbon world, responsible for developing Woodford Reserve, "Gentleman Jack," and Jack Daniel's Single Barrel bourbons.
The event is this Tuesday, October 16th, and price for dinner is $150 wihich includes a reception, dinner, valet, taxes & gratuity plus a celebratory bottle of Picán labeled bourbon specially blended by Angel's Envy.
