Learn The Restaurant Ropes Courtesy of San Francisco Small Business Development Center
The San Francisco Small Business Development Center is launching a "Restaurant Series" of seminars aimed at demystifying some of the many hurdles that owning and operating an eatery entails. These are workshops designed to be super-affordable and to separate the truly serious entrepreneurs from the ones with food stars in their eyes.![]()

Before the Restaurant Series begins, there is a three-day workshop (Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Nov. 5) called "Kick Starting Success" aimed at service, retail, and restaurant entrepreneurs that covers vital basics such as developing a business plan and sourcing funding. Tickets ($50) are available on Eventbrite.
Sessions in the Restaurant Series include lessons on managing employees, risk, and the law (Nov. 19), ways to be profitable beyond efficient food costing (Nov. 26), how to build a PR image (Dec. 3), and QuickBooks fundamentals (Dec. 10), so there are several angles of what are key facets of the hospitality industry available to learn for very little money. These are the events most targeted to restaurateurs, but the SFSBDC offers a wide range of general classes that could also be quite practical
Classes average around two hours but can last as long as five and take place at the SBA Entrepreneur Center, 455 Market (at First St.). Admission is $35-65 and may also be purchased in advance via Eventbrite.
