Once a month, Oakland's Hodo Soy Beanery (2923 Adeline St.) pulls back the curtains on its tofu-making process with a public tour. Well, you won't actually risk breaking your neck on the slippery factory floor, but you do get to watch workers through the windows as the basic processes of making tofu and byproducts like yuba (tofu skin) are narrated, paired with a tasting of the highlights of the company. Founder Minh Tsai is an engaging tofu master who explains that he couldn't find the kind of tofu he grew up eating daily with his grandfather in Vietnam, so he left the business world to pursue an artisan food dream. Take it from a tofu non-enthusiast: Hodo Soy's creations might make you rethink the stereotype of blandness.

If going to Oakland isn't convenient, Hodo Soy has its own kiosk at the Ferry Building in San Francisco that carries products which aren't on the shelves anywhere else

The next tours are at 10:30 a.m. on October 10 and November 14. Admission is $12; purchase in advance via Eventbrite.
