Ben & Jerry's has released a special edition version of their Stephen Colbert-endorsed flavor, Americone Dream, just in time for election season.

The new packaging is part of the ice cream company's "Take the Dough Out of Politics" campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of money spent on political campaigns. To support the cause, Ben Cohen (the "Ben" of "Ben & Jerry's") is taking to the streets of San Francisco this week to give away free ice cream and stamp political messages on your dollar bills, reports our news blog The Snitch.

But back to the sweet stuff. The contents of the delicious, fudge-covered waffle cone-studded ice cream won't change, but the revamped container features snazzy new red, white, and blue bunting; an icon proclaiming it a "2012 Collectable Election Year PACkage!", and a special message from Stephen Colbert on the back:

Let us know if you're lucky enough to spot Cohen on the street and score some free grub, or if you plan to buy a bunch of these containers, eat all the ice cream, carefully wash and dry them, and then preserve them in plastic as Election 2012 keepsakes forever.
