The Pastry Cupboard's Oatmeal Medley Has a Way With Fruit
The Pastry Cupboard is celebrating one year as a retail shop. The shop is the brainchild of Chona Piumarta, who formerly worked as a pastry chef at the Slanted Door and LarkCreekSteak restaurants, and serves light breakfast and lunch fare alongside baked goods such as pies, cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.![]()

Piumarta's Oatmeal Medley is a lovely example of how dried fruit can improve a cookie. Too often, the inclusion can provide textural challenges, but the dried sour cherries and cranberries she uses have a lot of great sweet-tart flavor and won't cause cottonmouth. Small pieces of walnut provide a nice counterpoint to the oats, and help to form the nooks and crannies that keep the mouthfeel interesting. The cookie is dominantly chewy but there are some nice, crisp edges.
Shopping tip: Rainbow Grocery also carries selected cookies from the Pastry Cupboard, including the Oatmeal Medley.
