The rundown: 18 Reasons is no stranger to the potluck party, but this one is particularly inventive. Bring your own homemade ice cream or a sundae topping for this communal dessert-a-thon. Don't be intimidated if you're an ice cream newbie. If you have access to an ice cream maker or are ready to splurge and spend $50 on the low-end Cuisinart model, you can easily learn how to make your own ice cream in time for the event.

If you want to go beyond Googling to making something you know will work right away, 18 Reasons' sister business Bi-Rite Creamery put out an easy-to-follow cookbook earlier this year called Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones: 90 Recipes for Making Your Own Ice Cream and Frozen Treats from Bi-Rite Creamery.

The beauty of a potluck is that some will inevitably overachieve with their contributions while others just eke on by, so of course you can be boring and just show up with a bag of chopped nuts.
