Get Your Snack On: Toasted Coconut Chips

Imagine these in your trail mix or granola.
A pouch of toasted coconut chips from local (and, it must be said, unfortunately named) Dang Foods came in the mail the other day. Like all unsolicited food samples that arrive at SFoodie headquarters, we sampled them diligently ... then found ourselves eating the whole bag.

The chips admittedly look a bit like wood shavings, but are crunchy, slightly sweet, and have an unmistakeable coconut flavor. They're made in Thailand, where company founder Vincent Kitirattragarn's family lives (he got the idea from a recipe for Thai lettuce wraps his mother passed down), by toasting mature coconut meat with sugar and salt until it's lightly brown. They're great on their own, but we can't wait to try them with ice cream, salad, and sprinkled over cereal.

Kitirattragarn will be doing a demo tasting at Farm Fresh to You in the Ferry Building on Sun., Aug. 26 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. You can buy 1.4-oz ($2.99) and 3.2-oz. ($4.99) pouches of the chips at Bi-Rite Market, Little Vine, Village Market , and The Pasta Shop in the East Bay. And they just launched a Kickstarter campaign to get funds for growth.
