Cocktail Preview: S.F. Street Food Fest and Night Market
Barely recovered from the food coma of SF Chefs and Outside Lands? Buck up, it's time to grub and drink to your carts content at La Cocina's fourth annual San Francisco Street Food Festival, a celebration and fundraiser chock-full of street food and food trucks.
The cocktail bars are being organized and handled by Rye on the Road and mixed by many of your favorite bartenders from the Bay Area. You'll need to buy tokens for the drinks (each token is $4) with beers running one token ($4), and cocktails requiring two ($8). The featured beer will be Amstel Wheat and Amstel Light, which was the go-to for most last year, tapping dry about 60 plus kegs per bar. Burp.
Spreading the culinary love to two days this year, the event kicks off with a special Alemany Night Market on Friday night with special guests like BBQ pit master Rodney Scott from South Carolina, Javier Plascencia from Mision 19 in Tijuana. Unlike the Saturday day festival, tickets ($25, available online) are required to get in, but more importantly, you are not confined to the bar areas with your cocktails. This and the bar menu alone are worth the ticket price.
Feeling chilly? Get the Rock & Rye Hot Toddy (rye whiskey infused with citrus, pineapple, spices & sweetened with rock candy) or buy a flask ($20) full of Rock & Rye to wander the market. Also featured will be an Old Fashioned (choice of rye, aged rum, or reposado tequila stirred with choice of bitters and served with a large hand cut ice cube) and a Street Food Swizzle (Flor de Cana 7 year Rum, lemon, maple, port, aromatic bitters, crushed ice) to quench your thirst. Whole Foods' Steep Brew will also be setting up a beer garden for your sudsy needs.

At the main event on Saturday, three bars will grace the streets, with the main hub at 21st and Shotwell with two bars and two food vendors (4505 Meats, Estrellitas Snacks -- makers of delicious plantain chips). The menu for Saturday is all frosty with a Spicy Paloma (Espolon Tequila Blanco, jalapeno, grapefruit, lime, seltzer, salt, sweet pepper), Classic Daiquiri (Flor De Cana Extra Dry Rum, lime, sugar), and Mint Julep (Wild Turkey Rye Whiskey, mint, sugar, crushed ice). Remember to stay hydrated and that you cannot leave the bar area with alcohol, so bring some food in with you!
