Tartine's Sandwich Shop, K-Pop Restaurant, and S.F.'s Official Restaurant Domination

Categories: Buzz Machine

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

Hey Tartine fans, get in line now -- Bar Tartine's sandwich shop officially opens today. Eater SF notes you can dine-in or take-out, but you're not able to buy the loaves you love just yet -- perhaps by fall.

Love K-Pop? Never heard of K-Pop? Either way, there's apparently a K-Pop Restaurant in the works. Grubstreet reports the sister restaurant to Osaka Sushi and Barracuda is slated for the corner of Castro at 18th Street. No opening date as of yet, but if you weren't a fan of the boy bands of the late 90's, or don't have "Call Me Maybe" on repeat -- then this may not be the place for you.

Here's an interesting fact: San Francisco has the highest density of restaurants in the U.S., according to a report by Trulia. We win, by a lot -- nearly 50% over second place. They also found we rank eighth when it comes to the density of bars. Really, how could any city compete with New Orleans (first), and Milwaukee (second)?

In disgusting food news, Inside Scoop reported yesterday that beloved Vietnamese dive Tu Lan has been temporarily shut down by the Department of Public Health for major health violations. The report, published on the department's website, is pretty gross: "high-risk" violations include vermin, unsanitary food contact surfaces, and improper refrigeration. It's the restaurant's fourth temporary closure in the past sixteen months.

Eater SF also discovers CoNam, the latest restaurant venture from Trung Nguyen (Unicorn, Region), will be dishing out authentic - and some hard to find - Vietnamese dishes. Look for an opening the third week of August.

Also, Inside Scoop says Circolo did indeed close last week - their lease was up (and they had ongoing issues with their landlord). The restaurant team is now focused on their other venture, Thai Taste, slated for Mission Street. Who will take the now vacant Circolo space? It's anyone's guess.

1. SF has had the highest density of restaurants for decades.

2. About time for Tu Lan. Once, I had the unfortunate experience of facing the cooking area while dining there. The scene was so disgusting, I couldn't look. And I couldn't finish my meal.
