The rundown: There's a line out the door every day here for sandwiches, but the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen is normally closed at night. This special evening event in partnership with Tillamook features pitchers of sangria and local craft beer, wine by the glass, and, naturally, grilled cheese sandwiches with sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, and optional toppings such as smoked turkey, housemade pickles, cured ham, and applewood-smoked bacon. Sandwiches are half-price -- $3 instead of the usual $6 --and Tillamook is known for its good cheesy swag, like squeezable stress blocks shaped like cheddar and buttons aplenty, so prepare for some additional flair.
If you're in the vicinity this afternoon (Aug. 21), the eatery is offering free slices of a mammoth grilled cheese "cake" to celebrate winning a small business grant.
