Those prone to cuteness attacks should beware impulse buys.
Cute shop alert: Umami Mart is opening on August 3 (815 Broadway, Oakland) as part of Old Oakland's Pop-Up Hood project.

Umami Mart began as an international food and drink blog and grew to encompass an online shop of quirky yet functional Japanese cooking accessories that launched in November 2010. Pop-Up Hood has offered six months of free rent in a former gallery space to take the Umami shop into the brick and mortar realm; Umami will sign a release at the end of the period if it shows signs of profitability.

If bar and kitchenware can be considered sexy, Umami's online selection is largely hot and sleek, with just enough Japanese cuteness to snag vulnerable impulse buyers. There aren't many items available, but that will change as Umami blossoms inside the new store, the design of which is described as "Shinto meets Scandinavia."
