Drink of the Week: Sutton & Celery at Cotogna

The idea for creating a new cocktail can come from some unlikely places. For Cotogna bar manager Jason "Buffalo" LoGrasso, it was the classic peanut butter on celery stick afterschool snack that inspired a new aperitivo cocktail, the Sutton & Celery ($10, Sutton Cellars Brown Label Vermouth, Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray celery soda, Small Hand Foods Orgeat).

It's a tasty combination in solid form that translates remarkably well to cocktail form. The locally produced Sutton Vermouth provides the alcohol, herbal, and spice foundation for a subtle, fresh vegetal quality of the celery seed based soda. The orgeat adds more than almond nuttiness, accenting the citrus and floral qualities of the vermouth while providing a little sweetness. The conceptual resemblance to the afterschool snack adds a whimsy that recalls days spent hard at play.

A light and cooling way to start a meal, the Sutton & Celery is low enough in alcohol to pair with most of the antipasti, including the renown sformato. Now that school's out for summer, feel free to order another.
