San Francisco's Top 8 Fake Meat Sandwiches
8. Boogaloo's
3296 22nd St. (at Valencia)
![]() |
We all know Boogaloo's does some of the greatest breakfasts in the city, but have you tried their lunch options lately? Their huge "Fake Stake" sandwich is super satisfying, but what we really love is the fact that someone here had the good sense to give the option of adding fake stake to their grilled cheese-n-tomato. Throw some avocado on that bad boy and you have pretty much the perfect sandwich.
7. Loving Hut
845 Market (at Fifth St.)
1365 Stockton (at Vallejo)
524 Irving (at Sixth Ave.)

The "meat"-to-bread ratio is a little disappointing at this nationwide chain (not enough of the former, too much of the latter), but the fact that there's an exclusively vegan fast food place in the middle of downtown S.F. (in the Westfield mall, no less) is fantastically convenient. The Loving Huts in Chinatown and the Sunset have completely different menus, but the Westfield stand has three fake meat sandwich options, and they're all delicious. Our favorite is the Queen, with its tangy soy protein and plentiful cilantro.
6. Gestalt Haus
3159 16th St. (at Albion)
![]() |
Sorry teen vegans, this is a bar, so if you want one of Gestalt's peppery vegan tuna melts, you'll have to get an older friend to bring you one. Also on offer here is the "Whitney Houston," featuring vegan sausage, red peppers, avocado, cheese, and salad. We're pretty sure the bartender didn't wash his hands post-cigarette to make our sandwich, but that's okay -- if you volunteer to eat in a 16th Street dive bar, them's the breaks.
