Jean-Pierre Moullé to Retire from Chez Panisse; Shutters: Pastores, Dibb's, West Portal Bakery
![]() |
Since the doors opened in 1975, chef Jean-Pierre Moullé has been a pillar of Alice Waters' Chez Panisse. Now, he's readying to retire his apron and step out of the kitchen, according to Inside Scoop. Replacing his seasonal (six-month rotation) in the kitchen will be cafe chef Cal Peternell. Of course, after 37 years, he'll not leave the restaurant entirely. In her statement Waters notes that he'll still pop into the kitchen for special events, and remain a part of the Chez Panisse teaching kitchen.
Bernal Heights' Pastores has served its last chile relleno. Grub Street discovers the space will reemerge under new ownership as the Cave Grill.
Over at West Portal Bakery, it looks as though the ovens have gone cold. Eater SF notes the papered windows and disconnected phone line, which don't point to a short-term closure.
And Eater SF also learns, via a reader, it looks like the Western Addition BBQ joint Dibb's is gone. A neighboring business owner says the new owners are opening an Indian and Pizza-focused joint in the space.
