Bernal Heights Dispensary's Mexican Chocolate Chip Cookie Is Just Like Nana Never Used to Make

Please keep kids out of this cookie jar.
When SFoodie put out the word that it needed a reviewer to navigate the murky waters of medicinal cannabis edibles, I knew I was the dude for the job.

First of all, I've been a foodie since I first turned my nose up at my mom's chicken a la king. (If you've seen the great indie flick Big Night, where the woman comes to the stunning epiphany that her mother was an awful cook ... that's me. Except the woman part.)

As for the cannabis part, well, to paraphrase Shel Silverstein, I've been smoking 41 of my 44 years. I've been writing about it for more than a decade, and I've been a patient for nearly that long. As a former grower, I know very well how to turn a stick of butter into something that would turn an angry alpha male gorilla into Wavy Gravy.

We live in a strange time for cannabis policy in this state, and particularly in the Bay Area. Unlike an alarming number of California communities who refuse to comply with the will of voters (often the same communities who are only too happy to enthusiastically support other voter-based initiatives like Prop. 8), we in San Francisco and Oakland can enjoy our hard-fought freedoms with the backing of our appropriate municipal agencies.

But sometimes even this support can be qualified. Both cities are struggling to accommodate the limitations of a poorly written statute -- Prop. 215 was in many ways like a Hail Mary pass that few expected to be enacted into law, even the voters whose full-throated endorsements helped usher it into existence. The infrastructure of delivery was never accounted for, causing a huge headache even for cities who believe in medical cannabis.

Even now, the rules of producing and vending cannabis edibles is shifting. But there are still plenty of choices for patients, and this column aims to help you find the most inspired selections and avoid what can often be mediocre munchies.

When I first opened the package for Bernal Heights Dispensary's Mexican Chocolate Chip Cookie, I took a big whiff. Along with the requisite green smell (not too overpowering), I took in an enticing smell of my childhood: being in my Nana's kitchen, sneaking a triangle of Ibarra chocolate from the cupboard.

Generally speaking, whether cookies are medicinal or not, they tend these days to have too many chocolate chips. Am I the only one who want Chips Ahoy to back the fuck off? Maybe, but for medicinal purposes, the fewer the better, and the folks at BHD got it just right. They have in-house operations for all their edibles, and their pride in this shows.

The Mexican Chocolate Chip cookie uses an indica-based butter, and the effects were very ... creepy. By this I mean hours later the effects would creep back on, which was really nice.

Chocolate chip cookies are a staple at most dispensaries, but Bernal Heights Dispensary's Mexican Chocolate Chip cookie offers a subtle twist sure to please anyone with a taste for Abuelita.
