While San Francisco's gourmet food-truck keeps expanding and Oakland's new-wave food trucks push the city to let them cover new territory, the East Bay city's taco trucks -- the ones who predated and inspired this new street food movement by three decades -- are under attack. Literally.

. Cash businesses, the taco trucks have been seen as easy targets for robbers, and most of the robberies go unreported to the police. Just three months ago, the five-year-old son of one lonchero
was shot and killed
in what may have been retaliation for a thwarted robbery years before.
Now the trucks are organizing to hire security guards -- at a cost of $40,000 a month -- and install cameras on their trucks. Safety comes at a high price for business owners who only charge $1.25 or so per taco.
