In Pursuit of Balance: Celebrate the California Wines That Get Amount of Alcohol Right

Jim Clendenen from Au Bon Climat talks to tasters at Last Year's In Pursuit of Balance
At most gathering of wine-folk, talk eventually turns to the topic of high-alcohol wines. Personally, I'm not too opinionated on the matter just so long as the alcohol is in balance as an element of the wine.

But that balance is harder to achieve as the alcohol content climbs higher. If a fruit-forward, super Cab clocks in close to 15%, I won't take issue just because of the number on the label, but achieving balance at 15% is a difficult task. I have at least one Pinot-producing friend who insists that, in the case of that grape, it is impossible to achieve balance over 14%.

If balance beckons, you'll likely be beguiled by "In Pursuit of Balance," a movement-cum-trade-affiliation-cum-consumer-and-trade-tasting. The group/movement/event was started by one of San Francisco's top Somms, Rajat Parr of Michael Mina and RN74, and Jasmine Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards "to celebrate wineries striving to produce balanced pinot noir and chardonnay in California," with a "focus on characteristics which make pinot noir and chardonnay great - subtlety, poise and profound expression of terroir." If you want the full terroir, take a look at their Manifesto of Balance.

Their second annual wine tasting is coming up ... and in danger of selling out.
