A Nutritious Cookie That Is Actually Awesome

Almond Cup by Nina's Nutritious Cookies.
The "health" corner of the cookie market is dominated by offerings that make better paperweights than desserts. Your voracious Cook E. Monster has wasted unconscionable amounts of pocket change finding out this fact in a vain quest for guilt- (and gluten-) free sweets, but the research has finally yielded a gem.

Nina's Nutritious Cookies of Oakland might actually be costing itself some business with its moniker, at least as far as its Almond Cup is concerned. This tart-like cookie is made with ingredients such as stone-ground whole wheat flour, flax seeds, and almonds, which on paper sounds like a recipe for a dry mess but in practice is surprisingly luscious.

They're low in sugar but still sweet enough to feel like a treat, with a soft and almost macaroon-like texture (though there's no coconut inside). Hide the label before serving to the sugar fiends, and you will not be on the receiving end of dessert snobbery. We know we'd much rather get our Omega 3 in this way than fish oil.

Find Almond Cups at Nina's Rockridge shop (6601 Telegraph, Oakland) or in San Francisco at Rainbow Grocery.

By checking beforehand in a non busy time, you can find if the restaurant is happy to cook your pasta (you bring from home) or whatever gluten alternative product they don't have. After all, don't they need you as a worthwhile loyal customer? If not, don't worry, there are many gluten free restaurants in the book.

One of the biggest challenges for an individual with celiac disease is going out to eat. While the public is becoming more educated on this disease, it can still be a challenge to enjoy a night out to dinner and to avoid allergens such as gluten. Trusting a waiter's acknowledge about an item being gluten free can be stressful, especially if the one eating has an extreme case of celiac disease.

On the subject of asking about g free, it unquestionably helps if the gluten free restaurant openly exhibits signs expressing that they are gluten free knowledgeable or have g-free menu foods. If they do not, some celiac like to display a gluten free definition card which aptly describes the disease and what foods they can not consume. Preferably a celiac should to have dining companions who are supportive, maybe even ones who will proactively request the gluten free query for them.

Agreed.. Nina's makes a couple gluten-free products, but the cookie reviewed here is NOT g/f.
