Teatro ZinZanni's New Home Is Not a Done Deal, Two Shutters in SOMA
The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.
As America's Cup sails in to the City, the soon-to-be-displaced Teatro Zinzanni has found a (long term) temporary home on Broadway (at Davis). Grub Street learns, via the Business Times, the circus-cabaret dinner show is readying to hoist its tents a half-mile south from its current location (Pier 29), but will need a bit of magic to make this new space work -- They need to raise $4 million for the move. The curtain will fall on the current stage after the New Year's Eve performance.
Changes afoot: LiveSOMA reports two recent closings in the neighborhood. Passion Cafe has officially shuttered, while Dottie's True Blue Cafe gets ready to move into the space. Our fingers are crossed that the move proves prosperous. Meanwhile, Sidebar Wine Tavern has temporarily closed. LiveSOMA notes that when the space reopens its doors this Spring it will have transformed its menu and décor.
Daily Candy reveals the new duo shop, Square Meals and Batter Bakery, opened yesterday (2127 Polk at Browadway). Eater SF sneaks a peek at the opening menu of savory winter dishes that sit alongside the sweets. The establishment also has a liquor license, and plan to extend their weekend hours with the new year.
Food truck news: The food truck saga continues in Oakland. First, there were the problems with Bites on Broadway, now What the Fork discovers that the mobile food vendors at last Friday's Art Murmur were shut down and must appear in court and pay a fine. Tonight, the city votes on an interim food truck policy that would allow them to gather while a long-term solution is figured out.
Bouche, the California-French restaurant on Bush, is readying for opening day. Owner Guillaume Issaverdens tells Grub Street that opening day is slated for Thursday, Dec. 8.
The recently shuttered Candy Darling, a large storefront that offered small treats, is set to become a carry-out lunch spot. Inside Scoop reveals the project will be an extension of Sons & Daughters, which is just down the street from the location. Look for a January opening.
