Drink of the Week: Garden Gimlet at Make Westing

The Garden Gimlet cocktail
When Make Westing first opened up, the indoor bocce courts were the feature that everyone kept mentioning. While they are a nice element in the expansive and beautiful space, bartender Caroline Pagel's Garden Gimlet ($8, gin, cucumber, basil, lime, simple syrup) is what they really should have been talking about.

A balanced and lightly sweet twist on the classic gimlet (gin, lime, sugar), the bright emerald green color seems almost nostalgic for the previous tenant-- a jewelry store. Floral from the cucumber and basil without being grassy or overly cloying, it's the kind of cocktail that makes us wish we could do this with all our vegetables. Rutabaga gimlet? Probably not.

As an added bonus, the drink is only $6 during happy hour, from 4 to 6 p.m. every day.

Make Westing, 1741 Telegraph (at 18th), Oakland, 510-251-1400
