War Pig, a Meaty Cocktail at Brunch Drunk Love
Brunch Drunk Love, a weekend pop-up from Top Chef alum Ryan Scott at Bruno's bar in the Mission, takes the pomposity out of brunch with approachable yet unusual comfort food fare. Whether it conjures up sounds of Black Sabbath or one of the considerably friendlier tunes being played in-house by a DJ, the most provocative adult beverage offering here is the War Pig, a glass of bacon-washed Bulleit bourbon frothed up with egg white and flavored with apricot, maple, lemon, and caramelized bitters. The bacon aftertaste keeps this firmly away from girlie drink territory, but it isn't too macho for us.
This hair of the dog (pig?) is a great foil to Scott's playful menu items like his sticky icky brioche buns and macaroni and cheese spring rolls. Word has it Scott is working on his own permanent restaurant in West Portal, this in addition to 3-Sum Eats, his food truck bearing the motto, "Get sauced, tossed, and sandwiched."
