Matt and Mary Kreutz bake in a wood-fired oven in a warehouse in Oakland, not a bad metaphor for the rustic, urbane breads they produce. Firebrand's walnut-wheat is so earthy it's almost elemental. You have to fight with the loaf to grab off a chunk, worrying that the jagged crust will puncture skin, but the flavor is worth the fight, deep and tinged with smoke, its potent tang broken up by pebbles of creamy walnut meat. It's the kind of bread you imagine was made by a 14th century master baker.

We tried this sesame bread a couple days good, right out the oven..and it did not disappoint.  Toasty and moist all night long, it was the best bread we've every had.  Definitely worth the wait for this loaf of heaven.

What does "naturally leavened" mean in the context of the Tartine sesame bread? Isn't bread usually naturally leavened with yeast or baking soda?

naturally leavened means that is uses yeast from the air. That is, without any commericial yeast. It's part of what makes bread special in each city.

Ironically it is also National Celiac Awareness day. 

I would add Morell's wood fire brick oven bread from Marin. Available at Berkeley Farmers Market Thursday and Saturday's.

The article does focus on San Francisco, not Marin or Berkeley.

These Top 5 lists are always awful. Not only is it easy to think of better options left out, its easy to choose which Top 5 choice should be eliminated instead. 

No Arizmendi this time? Josie Baker? Bakers of Paris? Outerlands deserves more than runner up. Acme is ok, but nowhere close to the Top 5 in SF.
