"San Francisco" Ice Cream in Korea: Homage, or Ripoff?

Fell & Cole ice cream in Seoul, Korea recreates some of Humphry Slocombe's and Bi-Rite Creamery's flavors

​Humphry Slocombe proprietor Jake Godby, or whoever is in charge of the Mission District ice cream shop's Twitter account, is not pleased about a new Seoul, Korea ice cream shop called "Fell & Cole."

​The shop, described in this CNN story, is an open homage to S.F.'s new creative style of ice cream.

"I can have my little San Francisco here," Ho-June "Tristan" Choi told CNN. Choi discovered Humphry Slocombe while getting an MBA from University of San Francisco.

Can ice cream be intellectual property? Choi has gone so far as to offer some of Godby's signature flavors, notably Jesus Juice (red wine and Coke).

And not just Humphry Slocombe -- patrons in the story praise the shop's burnt salted caramel and honey lavender flavors, which are favorites from Bi-Rite Creamery.

Barring international legal fisticuffs, we'll just take this as validation that San Francisco is the most exciting place in the world these days for ice cream. And these are just two of our five favorite shops! Choi, you've got more copying potential.
