Castagnola's Kitchen Walkout, Ryan Scott's New Place, and Groceries by Boat

A packed restaurant with a kitchen staff walkout is among a manager's worst nightmares. Inside Scoop reports that Castagnola's kitchen staff walked out on the Fisherman's Wharf restaurant on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., while the dining room had with approximately 200 Labor Day weekend revelers (a night estimated to bring in between $30-$40k). The walkout was in protest of the restaurant's recent changes: extended hours, new menu, and new management. While the restaurant has already hired a new kitchen staff, Inside Scoop hypothesizes a more covert reason for the walkout: illegal immigrant labor issues.

It looks like Brunch Drunk Love's Ryan Scott has found the place he's been looking for. Inside Scoop shares he'll open a grab-n-go restaurant at 68 West Portal (at Vicente) this winter. No word yet on the fare or name. He's going to have a busy fall, as Inside Scoop notes he's also set to debut a second 3-Sum Eats truck this October.

This may be a first for the Bay Area: groceries by boat. Eater SF reports, via Bay Crossings, Oakland's pending Green City Grocery will boast one boat dock for grocery getters. The store is also focusing on a "90/90" goal, where 90 percent of the store's items are sourced within 90 miles of the store.

That SFgate story on Castagnola is nothing but sleazy insinuations. What the heck do illegal immigrants have to do with Castagnola's walk-out? The writer presented no facts, no details. Even the basic writing is poor: workers asked to put in an extra two hours "at the same rate." What rate is that: hourly rate in which they would make more money, or day rate, which would mean getting paid less per hour? 

SF Weekly shouldn't be linking to such shoddy stuff.
