Ever wondered where all those ripe red tomatoes come from?

Barry Estabrook, former contributing editor of Gourmet magazine, has some of the answers -- but they may not sit so well with you.

Estabrook published Tomatoland: How Modern Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit last month. The book explores the dirty details of tomatoes grown in Immokalee, Florida: toxic pesticides; horrid working conditions; and gross farming practices, just to name a few.

He will read selections from his new book at the Ferry Building's Port Commission Hearing Room tonight from 6 to 8. Hit the jump for more details.

Aside from Estabrook, the event will feature Nigel Slater from Eatwell Farm, Larry Jacobs of the Del Cabo cooperative, and farm worker advocate Damara Luce of Just Harvest USA. Estabrook will sign copies of his book after the reading.

The event is free (with a suggested donation of up to $5), and you can reserve your spot here.
