The Ritz Readies for Change, and Dumplings & Buns Pre-Opening Bites

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

The Ritz is puttin' on a new name. Inside Scoop reports The Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton is set to shutter on Sept. 15, after it opened 20 years ago with Gary Danko at the helm. Chef Ron Siegel will stay in the kitchen of the more modern casual-fare restaurant, which will also boast a bar and cocktail program. The currently unnamed restaurant is aiming for an opening before the holiday season.

A couple of bun bites: Eater SF shares a quick look inside Cafe Bunn Mi, which opened in mid-July in the Inner Richmond (417 Clement at Fifth Ave.). Just down the street from our favorite banh mi spot, Cafe Bunn Mi's Vietnamese sandwiches are already gaining a fan base as well. We went by there yesterday and the window seating was packed.

Eater SF also shares that Pacific Heights' Dumplings & Buns is hosting a pre-opening test run later this month. The best part? It's free. To get on the list, follow on Twitter or friend on Facebook. For those who can't make the tasting, the Chinese bun shop from May Lee is scheduled to open before September.

In the East Bay, Birdland Jazzista Social Club is fighting to stay open. The East Bay Express shares that the jazz club was cited again for the same reasons as last year, which includes "food service at a nonpermitted event." Owner Michael Parayno says that by halting the handout of free barbecue to passersby and becoming a "members only" social club, he is no longer in violation of the city codes. Still no word from Berkeley.
