The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

Sandwich lovers rejoice! Three new spots will be serving up anything but the humdrum PB&J. Eater SF shares that Hot Press will be toasting panini at 2966 Mission (at 26th St.), but no word yet on an opening date. The Feast reports Vesta Flatbread's food truck will be rolling into the city after August 25. And Grub Street shares that the Pittsburgh-style Giordano Bros. second location (in the old Ti Couz) may open as early as next week (3108 16th St. at Valencia).

People's fire: On Haight, People's Café was hit with an early morning fire that started in a clothing store next to the restaurant. Eater SF reports the flames caused extensive indoor damage, and owners suspect it will be a month before they'll be open again.

The end of the month is looking pretty busy: Eater SF shares Union Street's Lite Brite Lite Bite, the Proxy Project's Biergarten, and the mid-Market Pearl's Deluxe Burger, are all aiming to open before Labor Day.

And a couple of updates on what to expect this fall: Grub Street reports AQ, slated to open between October and November, has a sample menu and new chef-partner, Mark Liberman (formerly chef de cuisine at La Folie). Inside Scoop reports Joseph Humphrey's Dixie will be opening in the two-year-shuttered Pres a Vi space in the Presidio.
