Pizza, Pizza, More Eating Under the Dome, and a Hookah Lounge Transforms

Categories: Buzz Machine

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

Two pizza places eye S.F.: Eater SF shares Mozzeria, a pizzeria documenting its trials and tribulations of pre-opening stressors and success, is slated to open in the Mission at 3228 16th St. (at Guerrero). No word on an opening date, but since its blog states it's still choosing an oven, we think it may be a while.

And from across the bay, Berkeley's Gioia Pizzeria is looking at Russian Hill for a possible S.F. outpost. Inside Scoop reports that the owners will go in front of the Planning Commission this week for a conditional use permit. If it all works out, they will move into a former hair salon space on Polk (at Green).

Another restaurant is slated to open alongside Cupola, Lark Creek Steak, and the pending M.Y. China from Martin Yan, and this one's a bit more familiar: La Boulange. Inside Scoop reports the restaurant will be aptly named La Boulange du Dome, and will feature an extended menu and a "La Dome" dessert. That makes two dome-inspired menu creations (the other is Cupola's dome bread). We're sure they'll be more.

With the recent crackdown on S.F. hookah lounges, some may disappear like, well, smoke. But the Tender catches wind of one transforming with the times, opening for breakfast and lunch, and even applying for a parklet: Nile Cafe (544 Jones at O'Farrell). Time will tell how well the rest of the city's hookah lounges will cope with the recently enforced extinguishing.

Out with the old, in with the new: Eater SF shares that the Castro's shuttered Fuzio will become Fork Café (469 Castro at 18th St.), and the Mission's hipster days are still going strong, as, via Grub Street, El Rincon will become Beards and Mustaches Dear Mom (2700 16th St. at Harrison). Eater SF also notes, via MrEricSir, that the former Bangkok 16 is set to become Krua Thai (3124 16th St. at Guerrero). No word on any projected opening dates.
