Wine with a Side of Diamonds, Sweet Treats, Vegas Rolls In, and a Holy Dog

Categories: Buzz Machine

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

Baubles and bubbles: Inside Scoop reports the first U.S. jewelry store with a fully licensed wine bar is now open. Lucky enough for us, while not so lucky for our wallet, it's in the Castro. D&H Sustainable Jewelers (2323 Market at Noe) has started serving -- what else -- sustainable wine, at the new Rose Cut Wine Bar (wine bar open Thu.-Sun.).

Can you ever have enough sweets? We think not. Eater SF shares that The Pastry Cupboard from Chona Piumarta (formerly the executive pastry chef of The Slanted Door and Lark Creek Steak) is readying to open in the shuttered Bistro Clovis space (1596 Market at Franklin). Piumarta started The Pastry Cupboard three years ago as a wholesale operation, but now the public will be able to drool over the display cases as early as Aug. 29.

After shuttering at the end of 2009, there's a new tenant set for the Shanghai 1930 space. Inside Scoop reports John Chen of Vegas's ROI Commercial, and another Vegas nightlife guru Matthew Minichino (Hard Rock Hotel, Nobu, Pink Taco) will open a swanky restaurant in the Embarcadero location. Though the proprietors hail from the mecca of nightclubs, there is no definitive direction for the space as of now (133 Steuart at Mission).

Maybe all dogs do go to heaven or somewhere holy at least. A new restaurant, Holy Dog, is slated for the current Pescara (1152 Fillmore at Geary), according to Eater SF. Daeho Hwang has filed for a beer and wine permit, in what Eater hypothesizes will be an Asian restaurant with no canines on the menu.

Pittsburgh-styled sandwiches are now in the Mission. Everyone (Tablehopper, Grub Street, Eater SF) confirmed today's the day that Giordano Bros. second location was set to open, and Eater gives the scoop that it's official (3108 16th St. at Valencia). Word on the street is they'll start assembling their everything-in-one sandwiches at 5 p.m. Go get in line.
