Muppet Bar Set to Open, La Boulange's Expansion, and Two Drunk Brunches

Categories: Buzz Machine

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

Grub Street has the deets on a couple of new bars. First, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, yes, named after the Muppet band, is scheduled to soft open tomorrow (2323 Mission at 19th St.). From the Bullitt/Tonic/Rebel team, the Mayhem bar interior is supposedly "pretty crazy." And staying with the new S.F. trend, a ghost-pepper burger will be on the food menu.

In the Mission, Grub Street reports the owners of Southern restaurant Front Porch are taking over the nearby International Club, with plans to reopen it as Rock Bar. No word yet on an opening date, or if they're planning on any renovations to make the bar more rock-centric.

The underground restaurant that housed Moussy's will reopen next week under the same ownership, as Muka (1345 Bush at Polk). The dessert and wine bar's menu is already online, with a tip of the hat to its former moniker: Moussy's (you guessed it) burger.

La Boulange's plans to expand have sped up, after hitting a road bump when the plans for a Pier One location fell though. The owners are still on schedule for their Sutter Street location. Grub Street reports its opening date is slated for September 19. But that's not all for the French bakery; it has plans to open a location in Walnut Creek this fall, and another city location at the Merchant Exchange Building this December.

A couple of brunch bites: If you're meeting friends at "drunk brunch," make sure everyone shows up at the same place. Eater SF reports Ryan Scott's Brunch Drunk Love, starting at Bruno's next weekend, has been beaten to the punch of drunk brunches by the similarly named Punch Drunk Brunch, which starts at 15 Romolo this weekend. Interesting.

Meanwhile, Brunch Box, San Francisco's first brunch truck, is set to debut on July 16. It will park outside Ritual Roasters and Sightglass (whose seating area opens in about a month) to provide breakfast for the coffee drinkers inside, and also has plans to appear near Ritual's Hayes Valley Proxy Project stand.

And in the Tenderloin, we missed the opening of Bento House (448 Larkin at Turk) last month. The Tender reports it currently serves lunch, with plans for dinner later.

Also, just a reminder, Bottle Cap (1707 Powell at Columbus), the American restaurant from Dane Boryta and Elizabeth Ferro, opens tonight.
