Crooked Dealings at Carlos Club, A Shutter After 30 Years, and More Burgers

Categories: Buzz Machine

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

Seeing double meant paying double at the now-shuttered Carlos Club. Grub Street reports, via Mission Local, the 24th Street bar's liquor license was suspended indefinitely on June 30 after a year-long investigation by the Alcoholic Beverage Control turned up illegal practices. Crooked dealings included pressuring patrons to buy more drinks as well as shots for the waitresses, and overcharging for drinks. We're expecting the property to be on the market any second.

In Bernal Heights there's a famous property on the market already. Inside Scoop reports that 17-year-old Liberty Cafe is for sale. No word on why the owners are selling, but the bakery and cafe are still open for now.

Another long-timer has already headed out. Eater SF reports that 33-year-old Indonesian Java Restaurant has shuttered. Rumor has it the owners retired. So long, Java.

Apparently Willie Brown has the scoop on where Teatro ZinZanni may be headed. Inside Scoop shares, via the Chronicle's Willie's World, that the Teatro may be moving to the triangle parking lot on Steuart at Howard. The one problem? It would sit in the way of the Gap corporate office's parking lot.

It appears the barbecue trend may have given way to burgers. First the rumors were cemented that Umami Burger was coming to Cow Hollow, and now mid-Market will welcome Little Griddle. Thrillist reports the breakfast and Niman Ranch burger restaurant will open tomorrow at 1400 Market (at Fell); future plans include Wagyu beef.

And with the Red Vic slated to shutter before month's end, Grub Street reports the moviehouse's next-door neighbor the Alembic wants to expand into the theater's lobby section. What will happen to the rest of the old Red Vic? Time will tell.

And there's an update on the renovation of Louis' restaurant on National Parks land at Point Lobos. The opening date, via the Richmond District Blog, has been pushed back from mid-July to August 3.
