Seventh Annual San Francisco Cinco de Mayo Festival

Where: Dolores Park

When: Sat., May 7,10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Cost: Free

The rundown: Yes, May 5 has passed, and no, Cinco de Mayo doesn't mark Mexican Independence Day (that's on Sep. 16). Cinco de Mayo festivities originated in California to commemorate Mexico's battle of Puebla, in which outnumbered Mexican troops kicked French butt. (An unintended consequence: The years of war that followed kept the French from interfering in the American Civil War.) Saturday's event in Dolores kicks off at 10 a.m. with a Zumba-thon (a calorie-burning aerobic exercise class, $10 suggested donation). Live entertainment starts at 11:30 a.m. with mariachi, salsa, Latin jazz, and Mexican folk dance performances. Plus lots of tasty foods, but as in past years, this family-friendly event is alcohol free.

No alcohol? They'd better be handing out pot instead.
