More Plate Shop Shake-up, New Monk Kettle Project, Mission Chinese Food Heads to China

Grub Street reports on why Kim Alter left Plate Shop, and who is taking over the helm of head chef. Yesterday, Tablehopper broke the news that Kim Alter walked out with the entire back of house staff -- well, apparently not everyone. Meat cook, Steve Matkovich, stayed on and will now fill the role of chef -- starting tonight. It's a daunting task with such short notice, made even more difficult because he has to come up with a whole new menu. Alter won't be lending her's to Plate Shop any longer. Snap.
Tablehopper shares that Monk's Kettle owners, Christian Albertson and Nat Cutler, are planning to open another Mission restaurant, but with a little more refinery. It'll be called Abbot's Cellar, and they'll focus more on beer and food pairings, include a daily changing menu. Extra fanciness alert: Beer taps will be specially adjusted for a beer's optimal drinking temperature. With a recently signed lease for the newly retail-converted 740 Valencia space, beer enthusiasts should look for an winter opening.
And with one crepe place shuttered, another one sets to open. It is the way of the modern creperie. Tablehopper reports Galette 88, offering savory and sweet crepes, is set to open in the old Pasta Bene place downtown by late Summer. Although it was the lack of foot traffic that was partially to blame for Pasta Bene's fold, we hope the smell of freshly-baked crepes lures foot traffic down to the 88 Hardie cul-de-sac.
Eater SF shares two pending openers: Le Bordeaux, the North Beach restaurant that announced its impending arrival via cardboard box, is set to open next month. The owners, Sylvain Castet and his girlfriend Famy, recently decided to sell their restaurant in Bordeaux, see the world, and open a French restaurant in San Francisco. Romantic.
The second is Fuel; the Vegas-esque bar will open in the former Etiquette Lounge space on Market this June. Look for sports games on the t.v. during the day and cabaret-styled shows at night.
And a couple quick open shuts from Tablehopper. Mission Chinese Food will be closed June 1-23 for a staff trip to China, while Bissap Baobab will shutter on June 1 to move around the corner to its new location on Mission.
Also from Grub Street, Oakland's Hawker Fare, the Asian street-food restaurant from Commis chef James Syhabout, will start serving dinner this Thursday, while Pearl City Seafood Restaurant is closed until June 3 for renovations.
And last but not least, Inside Scoop reports the deal fell through for the La Boulange at Pier One. Next up is a Union Square location set to open in September, with another location opening in the Metreon in November.
