Bites on Broadway: Friday Food Pod Launches June 10 at Oakland Tech
Oakland was a haven for food trucks long before Korean short ribs met the tortilla. And though ― outside Fruitvale ― the city's mobile vending rules won't allow trucks to cluster on city streets like they do in Emeryville, organizers are trying to devise work-arounds. First among them: a weekly food pod called Bites on Broadway, which will set up Friday nights on the plaza in front of Oakland Technical High School on Broadway at 45th Street starting June 10, 5:30-8:30 p.m. ![]()
Oakland Technical High School Mobile vendors (many of them part of a new collective) plan to set up Friday nights in front of Oakland Tech in Temescal.
It's being organized by Karen Hester, whose Hesternet Productions mounts events like the Rockridge and Temescal street fairs, and Elizabeth August, herself a vendor (Guerrilla Grub). August recently launched an Oakland mobile vendor collective (she's still working on the name), and most of its members have signed on to Bites on Broadway: pizza vendor Fist of Flour, Vesta Flatbread, Boffo Cart, Guerrilla Grub, peddle-powered vendor El Taco Bike, and new truck Go Streatery. August says more should come online soon, a total of perhaps five food vendors every Friday through Oct. 21. Also: live music, and lawn games like croquet and badminton. ![]()
Anthony S./YelpVesta Flatbread, which recently acquired a truck, is on board.
And August says she and Hester want to involve Bites on Broadway host Oakland Tech, maybe with a student art show or by featuring student musicians.
