Urban Farm Stands, Fava Leaves, and the Right Way to Sting

1. In this week's top story, John Birdsall reports that San Francisco finally revised its urban gardening regulations, becoming the most progressive city in the nation in that regards. (Let's hope it shames inspires Oakland to rethink the Novella Carpenter crackdown.) By August, I expect to see fourth-graders on every corner in Noe Valley, hawking the mâche they grew in their back yards.

2. SFoodie's 92-dish countdown rolls along, with fava greens, mussels steamed with harissa, and cumin lamb. In other words, a marginally balanced diet.

3. One thing I thought about after linking to two great pieces about food writerly excesses: Noreen Malone's takedown of self-congratulatory El Bulli stories is perhaps the corrective to the British tendency to wield hyperbole like a scourge. When you skillfully line up the evidence, as she does, a tart phrase or two can have the impact of a barrage of testicular insults.

4. Jesse Hirsch continues to profile SFoodie contributors. This week, we meet the woman behind the exclamation marks: our vegan correspondent, Laura Hooper Beck.

5. Lastly, it's hard to see Off the Grid's launch of a pop-up food truck -- that's right, a truck budding street-food vendors can rent by the day -- as anything but meta. I suppose the next step would be to rent out a Twitter feed to promote a newbie food vendor's one-time appearances. SFoodie promises to charge competitive rates.
