Babka Lust, Library Tips, and the Fawaffle: This Week in Food Bloggery

Sardines: Tasty, plentiful, and local.
Highlights from the blog this week:

1. In this week's Weekly cover story, "Go Fish," Peter Jamison argues that the answer to the question "How can I make sure my seafood is sustainably sourced?" is to eat local. He provides a list of local fish and shellfish to shop for. Or, in the case of California sardines, you can just go to Contigo for one of this year's 92 favorite dishes: sardine and avocado toasts with pickled onions.

2. Not to torture anyone who's already tired of matzoh, but Alex Hochman writes lovingly about Wise Sons Deli's chocolate babka French toast. Which you will be able to order the Saturday after next.

3. This week's profile of a SFoodie contributor, courtesy of Jesse Hirsch: eater-about-town, reality show critic, and former Uncouth Gourmand Carina Ost.

4. I learned from a San Francisco Public Library manager that all I need to do to get the library to buy a cookbook I can't afford is to "suggest" the library the book via a form on the library's website. And then wait three months and then place a hold on the book the moment it appears in the online catalog. Putting together a wishlist now.

5. In her weekly wrap-up of all news nondairy, Laura Beck discovers a new vegan online-discount site and a culinary portmanteau called the "fawaffle."
