The rundown: Maybe San Francisco isn't in the top tier of Mardi Gras cities. Our orgies of letting loose come later, in the dual guise of Carnaval (letting loose factor: 5) and the Folsom Street Fair (letting loose factor: scary), with its dog masks, harnesses, and black jockstraps. Why is Mardi Gras proper only a pink dot on the calendar here? Maybe because it's a holiday of the Catholic world, even if ― in New Orleans ― there's a healthy amount of showing your tits, or man parts. Nevertheless, if you're craving some connection to the Zulu Parade, head out after work for the last gasp of the four-day Fat Tuesday in the Fillmore, where 1300 on Fillmore is serving up a taste of the Big Easy, and where no one says your tube top can't experience a spontaneous wardrobe malfunction. Quite by accident, of course.
Menu highlights: Hurricanes, Abita beers, po'boy sliders, fried oysters, catfish
