The Turkey Sandwich at Chiotras Grocery, One of S.F.'s Best Places for a Tryst
San Francisco is full of great spots for a tryst, and there's no lack of places where you can get a quality turkey sandwich. But what if you want both simultaneously? SFoodie humbly suggests Chiotras Grocery. ![]()
Alex Hochman Chiotras' Turkey Sandwich
Situated in the middle of a residential block atop Potrero Hill, Chiotras looks innocent enough, the prototypical neighborhood market. Hidden in back, though, is a creaky, wind-protected wooden deck with westward views overlooking a duo of lemon trees and clear out to Twin Peaks. A couple of rickety chairs and an uneven faded yellow table add to the charm. TMZ's paparazzi brigade couldn't find Charlie Sheen and his "goddesses" back there in a million years so no worries about your spouse finding you. Neither could find a deli-counter turkey sandwich this solid either.
The $8.70 sandwich contains turkey brined overnight, then roasted ― the kitchen roasts a whole bird three times a week. Chunks, not slices, of breast meat are piled onto a toasted Panorama Bakery ciabatta roll, crisp and fluffy all at once. Of course, you can choose your cheese, but SFoodie likes Havarti, which is both creamy and tart. ![]()

The result reminds us of Thanksgiving leftovers minus the in-laws or the mess.
