It's Day Two. The gloves are off, and the beer beckons. If you're not venturing to Hayward for the 11th Annual Double IPA Festival, local options abound. Ease into your weekend Saturday with an afternoon happy hour of exclusive Sierra Nevada beers:

Sierra Nevada Brewing Night
Where: Pi Bar, 1432 Valencia (at 25th St.), 970-9670
When: 3-11:30 p.m.
Cost: Pay per drink
What: Try special releases from the brewery all night, including two that Pi Bar collaborated on: Hoptimum Double IPA and "Liquid Sourdough." Other treats include a limited-edition blond, bitter, and barrel-aged Belgian quadruple.

Once you've had your fill of domestic treats, it's time to turn Japanese for the evening:

COEDO Japanese Beer and Food Pairing
Where: Nombe Izakaya, 2491 Mission (at 21st St.), 681-7150
When: Every day of Beer Week, 6-11 p.m.
Cost: $40
What: Sample a pilsner, white ale, amber ale, and black lager from Japanese craft brewery COEDO. Each beer will be paired with a small plate from Nombe's kitchen. A true izakaya experience, without the pesky airfare.

Continue the Far East theme at new beer bar Amsterdam Café:

Kiuchi Brewery Night
Where: Amsterdam Café, 937 Geary Ave. (at Larkin), 409-1111
When: 7-11 p.m.
Cost: Pay per drink
What: Taste the globally respected Hitachino Nest line of beers from Japan's Kiuchi Brewery. Beers include a Belgian-style white ale, a beer made with ginger, and even a brew aged in used shochu barrels. A European beer bar serving Japanese brews in the heart of the Tenderloin: We aren't in Kansas anymore.

If your interests lie in woodsy, boozier beers, drop what you're doing and head to a barrel-aged beer tasting:

It Came From the Wood: Barrel-Aged Beer Tasting
Where: The Jug Shop, 1590 Pacific (at Polk), 885-2922
When: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Cost: $30
What: Enjoy an all-star array of beers aged in used spirits barrels. Highlights include Lost Abbey Deliverance (a blend of beers aged in brandy and bourbon barrels), a bourbon barrel Old Ale from North Coast, and an imperial stout aged in Evan Williams bourbon barrels from Truckee's Fifty Fifty Brewing. Your beer, and your liquor, in one convenient package!
