Guide to SF Beer Week's Food + Brew Pairings, Part 1

Beer Week supper at the Alembic.
​Stories abound of Belgian monks who toiled through laborious days with nothing to nourish them but low-alcohol beers designed for sustenance. But you're no monk. You're a hungry beer geek. Luckily, multiple beer dinners and pairing seminars are offered each day of SF Beer Week, Feb. 11-20. The biggest challenge is deciding where to use up your stomach (and liver) space. To help, here's part one of SFoodie's picks for daily beer-themed meals to soak up the suds. Note: Requested attire for some of these dinners is listed as "clothing, please." Let's all take that more as a rule than a suggestion.

Friday, Feb. 11

Prix Fixe Menu with Magnolia Beer
Where: The Alembic, 1725 Haight (at Shrader), 666-0822
When: Each day of Beer Week, 5 p.m.-1 a.m.
Cost: $35 for food; suggested beer pairings extra
What: Three courses designed to pair with Magnolia beers. If you're feeling courageous, pop over to Magnolia after dinner for a strong-beer sampler nightcap.

Saturday, Feb. 12

Brouwerij Van Steenberge Beer Dinner
Where: La Trappe (http://latrappecafe.com/), 800 Greenwich (at Mason, 440-8727
When: 7-11:30 p.m.
Cost: TBD
What: Jef Versele of Belgian brewery Van Steenberge joins revelers in "an evening of gluttony," i.e., beers paired with unique chefs' creations. You had us at "gluttony."


Sunday, Feb. 13

The Bruery Beer Dinner
Where: Fat Angel, 1740 O'Farrell (at Fillmore), 525-3013
When: 5:30-10 p.m.
Cost: $55 (tax and tip included)
What: Enjoy four dishes from this Fillmore gastropub, paired with beers from SoCal brewing titans The Bruery. Special beers offered, including a bourbon barrel-aged version of its Two Turtle Doves (brewed with toasted pecans and cocoa nibs). Open seating all night.

Monday, Feb. 14
SFoodie has already pointed you toward the always-inventive annual Beer and Nosh dinner, this year at The Summit. Since tickets are nearly sold out, here's another beery Valentine's Day option:

Producer Dinner: Pacific Brewing Laboratories
Where: 18 Reasons, 593 Guerrero (at 18th St.), 241-9760
When: 7-10 p.m.
Cost: $85 general/$75 members
What: An underground brewery showcased at an intimate foodie co-op. What could be more romantic? If you haven't dined with soon-to-be friends at the communal 18 Reasons table, now is the time. Pacific Brewing is creating special beers to be enjoyed with food from Bi-Rite meat slinger Morgan Maki.

Tuesday, Feb. 15

Ten-Code: Beer Dinner Sponsored by City Beer Store
Where: Citizen's Band, 1198 Folsom (at Eighth St.), 556-4901
When: Call City Beer Store at 503-1033 for details and tickets
Cost: $110 (tax and tip included)
What: Citizen's Band cooks up a five-course feast that includes duck confit, smoked pork belly, and other plates, paired with the varied beer portfolio of 12 Percent Imports. Expect treats from nomadic brewer Brian Strumke of Stillwater Artisan Ales, on hand to chat about his brews.
