Kool Herc doesn't have health insurance, and needs to come up with a hefty deposit for surgery.
Kool Herc (born Clive Campbell) threw the first-ever hip-hop party in 1973, and has been critically celebrated as the godfather of the youth culture that later took over the world. So it's especially painful to those in the global hip-hop community to hear this week's news of Herc being without health insurance, unable to have a stent removed from recent kidney stone surgery until he pays a substantial deposit. And while the likes of Diddy are busy throwing ignorant amounts of money into the air at Miami strip clubs, those with fewer resources are trying to do what they can to help Herc put a dent in his bills.

Locally, both locations of Papalote Mexican Grill (co-owned by veteran local hip-hop DJ Miguel Escobedo, aka DJ Mr. E) will donate 10 percent of its proceeds today to Herc's recovery/health insurance fund. Donations may also be sent via PayPal to Herc's sister Cindy Campbell (cindycampbell1@aol.com) and via check to Kool Herc Productions, P.O. Box 20472, Huntington Station, N.Y., 11746.

Papalote Mexican Grill: 1777 Fulton (at Masonic), 776-0106; 3409 24th St. (at Valencia), 970-8815.
