Caviar Docks to Open Privately at First, Little Saigon Cafe Closes

While all the other food blogs were enjoying Presidents Day, SFoodie found ourselves in the office, gathering gossip. From SFoodie editor John Birdsall comes an item exclusive to Buzz Machine: 

Bert Harris, owner of the shuttered Sohberts, approached bartenders Lisa Mongelli and Meredith Wilkinson to partner in the Caviar Docks (144 King, at Second St.,, which will begin as a private events space and eventually open to the public as a beer and wine bar. The space was long the loading dock for Tsar Nicoulai Caviar, hence the name. Up until four months ago, Mongelli worked the bar at Liege in Oakland; Wilkinson has tended bar at Salt House and is in her final year of law school. 

They hope to raise $5,000-$6,000 at a March 4 event they've titled "Stock the Docks." The money will help pay for ADA-compliance upgrades and other improvements to the Sohberts space, allowing them to open for private events on April 1, just in time for Giants opening day. Event highlights: raffle prizes, beer and wine, and paella, cooked outdoors over a big open brazier by Venga Paella. Tickets for the event are $40 per person, and can be purchased through the website.

Via Yelp, SFoodie contributor Luis Chong reports that Little Saigon Deli on Larkin has closed. Chong reports that owners Chuck Kerson and Linda Jiang will continue to bring their Happy Dumplings stall to the Stonestown Sunday farmers' market. UPDATE: Tenderblog reports that the space will become a production kitchen for Chairman Bao, which has also taken over the old Baguette Express space (668 Larkin) next door and is turning it into a takeout window.
