The Birth of a Sushirrito, the Death of a Paleta Shop

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco restaurant scene.

Tablehopper discovers a new portmanteau cuisine. Sushi + burrito = Sushirrito (59 New Montgomery, 495-7655, sushirrito.com). The pitch: nori-wrapped rice rolls, which sounds like giant fusion kimbap. Too bad "MegaFuBap" sounds like a Nickelodeon dance show.

Also from Tablehopper comes news that Wholesome Bakery has moved its retail stand out of 331 Cortland (to La Victoria, where the owner rents kitchen space). The spot was taken over by Special Request (650-630-7452, specialrequest.com), a gluten-free bakery owned by Vanessa Morales and Freddie Colombani.

Via Eater SF/Chowhound, we learn of the closing of Mandarina, the adorable Hayes Valley smoothie and paleta shop. Man, those side-street locations are risky.

Finally, Eater SF predicts that Leopold's (2400 Polk, at Union) will "soft open" next week in the former Antica space. The pitch: Austrian and Italian cuisines from the owners of Cafe Metropol.
