The CA Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is planning a protest Jan. 20 in Manhattan Beach.
The Jan. 8 shooting massacre at a Tucson mall is giving new impetus to a drive to make California eateries gun-free zones. State chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence yesterday announced a new initiative to make the Golden State's restaurants and coffee shops places where so-called open carry of firearms is prohibited.

First stop on the Brady Campaign's agenda: Picketing on Jan. 20 at Brooklyn Brick Oven Pizza in Manhattan Beach, where advocates of open carry are planning to congregate. It's part of the CA Brady Campaign's "Demand Gun-Free Dining in California!" They've lobbied the California Restaurant Association to urge its members to ban guns, and they're asking concerned citizens to download a gun-free pledge, available with anti-open carry signage at the organization's website, and demand that owners of their neighborhood eateries (along with other retail establishments) sign it.

Open carry ― i.e., toting a firearm in public spaces ― is legal in California, as long as the gun is unloaded and holstered (unless you're a uniformed police officer). The issue made news a year ago, when at least one member of the group Bay Area Open Carry ― meeting at a Peet's in Livermore ― was frisked by a police officer. That spurred Peet's to prohibit open carry at its coffee shops, followed by the California Pizza Kitchen in Walnut Creek, where open carry advocates were planning to rally. But Seattle-based Starbucks has refused to ban firearms in its cafes, which have become places where open carry advocates gather, firearms strapped to thighs, waists, and shoulders.

"They looked like a gang with those guns," says Shikha Hamilton, vice president of the statewide Brady Campaign and head of its San Mateo and Santa Clara county chapters. Hamilton has protested at open carry gatherings in the East Bay.

"I didn't know if those guns were loaded or not loaded. There were patrons of Starbucks who were very scared, especially moms with kids ― they turned around and left. As mothers we work so hard to keep violence out of our kids' lives. We don't want them to see guns while they're eating dinner or drinking hot chocolate."

Though the Shaadzee Bakery Cafe in Pleasant Hill and the Buckhorn Grill chain (two locations in San Francisco) has also banned open carry, the East Bay's Nation's Giant Hamburgers chain has so far refused, according to the CA Brady Campaign website.

I will not support any business that supports gun ban.

Maybe, after the evidence of these deplorable events it's time to seriously push this ban

Which deplorable events? People getting killed? I'm pretty sure murder is already illegal. You might also want to take a moment to think about what happened before firearms ever existed. You may recall from your history classes that the physically strong did whatever they wanted and the physically weak were at their mercy. Murder, rape, robbery... these things all existed LONG before firearms did, and they were much, much more commonplace because people were unable to protect themselves from superior forces.

More vitriol rhetoric from the far left.If they protested as hard to keep criminals off the street as they do preventing honest citizens from defend themselves it might help.

If only they would use their power for good.

Keep lobbying to make it easyer for a BG to rob your family and friends Brady, your just keeping law abiding citizens from protecting themselves. Id rather be in a establishment that promotes RKBA than not. We all know that criminals care about laws *rolls eyes*

Take just 5 minutes & go to the Calguns forum at

http://www.calguns.net/calgunf...

You will quickly see that most of the gun owners in this State do NOT support the tactics of these few paranoid gun owners running around town with pistols strapped to their sides. These paranoid "open carriers" do fer far more harm to honest gun owners every time they leave their homes than any good. Harley and his band of paranoids make the general public think all gun owners are paranoid gun nuts whoch couldn;t be farther from the truth.

Open carry has absolutely nothing to do with paranoia. It has to do with exercising the basic right to self defense. Because of California's draconian anti-gun laws, most city dwellers have no choice but to open carry if they wish to be armed, since getting a concealed weapons permit is impossible unless you are rich and well connected.

Do you think that someone should be ashamed to wear a sidearm in public? Open carriers have nothing to hide and are simply trying to protect themselves and stand up for their rights. Someone who has an issue with people exercising these rights is probably the same type of closed-minded person who thinks that women shouldn't vote and that blacks belong in the back of the bus.

Wow...Don't want your kids to see guns???? What do you think built this country? Men who have fought and died for this country, that's who. Sorry you have a problem with the fact that the right to own and bare arms is part of our constitution but guess what. That's America, The constitution isn't going anywhere. I swore to support and defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic and I will. If you have a problem with lawful American citizens owning and carrying guns than I as a soldier challenge you to get the hell out of America and go live somewhere that people haven't fought and died to live.

More undefended locations to hold up. When a criminal pulls an illegal gun on your family eating dinner, and takes your kid away for some fun, you'll wish there was someone there with a LOADED gun.

Just a note. These same parents buy their kids NERF guns, water guns, and other replicas. Then they let their kids read comics, watch violent TV and movies and read the paper. Way to look out! Why not teach your kids about firearms, take them hunting, or just a trip down to the range?

It's all about ignorant, scared people who have been bullied and filled with false facts and misleading statistics. Carrying a firearm, knife, bow and quiver or large stick, these are your contitutional rights, not privilege like driving a car. Honestly, if I were legally carrying firearms and refused service, I'd make a case for denying my rights. Lawsuits seem to be the only way anyone listens to common sense anymore.

Murder, armed robbery, rape and any other crime that can be commited while carrying a weapon are already illegal.

Out of sight.out out mind with the hand wringers. Let us have concealed carry and you won't have to traumatize your children with the thoughts and sights of reality They can go to some liberal shoot em' up movie if they want to see guns.

This is a great idea because, you know, nutjobs that shoot people respect laws against carrying a gun. Seriously. Crazy guy is planning to commit murder one, but if the café he's gonna shoot up has banned guns that'll definitely make him reconsider.

I've been a shooter for most of my life; which was quite difficult living as I did in the UK.However I think I would feel intimated if all and sundry were to carry guns in public places. My concern would be that they were fully trained as to safety etc.Beermatmanhttp://www.beermatsadvertising...

Banning guns will not stop gun violence. Prohibition doesn't work for anything, read a history book. By banning guns, you are compromising a citizen's ability to defend himself. Remember, criminals won't care whether guns are legal or not, that's why they are considered criminals.

If guns kill people, then pencils misspell words, cars drive drunk, and spoons make people fat. Remember: Hold the person accountable for their actions, not the means they chose to utilize!

the primary function of a gun is to inflict harm. that is what it is designed to do.

Since when is "violence" set to carrying an object? I thought violence was when you shoot someone, hit someone, use an object against another person to inflict harm. How does carrying a gun suddenly bring "violence" into these people's lives? Also I wonder when the last time that store was robbed? "As mothers we work so hard to keep violence out of our kids' lives. We don't want them to see guns while they're eating dinner or drinking hot chocolate." Then go somewhere else or at least teach your kids the difference between violence and carrying a holstered weapon.

Thats crazy, I personally think every American should be REQUIRED to carry ALL of the time! There would be no crime!
