Brixton Buck, a Citrus Rocker by the Brixton

Inspired by the Brixton Academy (now named O2 Academy Brixton), a famous British venue that's been home to live recordings by the likes of Faith No More, New Order, Gregory Isaacs, Judas Priest, and many others, the Brixton opened this week in the very un-rockin' neighborhood known as the Marina. The concert hall is posh, and so is this new bar and restaurant, right down to the Shepard Fairey-designed black and white flocked wallpaper and the elegant cocktails.

We miss the grit and edge of the real Brixton, the South London neighborhood that's the city's center of multicultural soul. That's not something that's been imported into this situation, but the drinks are good. Brixton Buck remixes the standard mule with Brugal dark rum, lime juice, orange juice, house-made ginger syrup, Peychaud's bitters, and a (to our palette) crucial splash of fizzy ginger beer. It disappears too quickly, and the beats take over.

The Brixton: 2140 Union (at Webster), 409-1114.
