The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco restaurant scene.

The first few weeks of January are always brutal ones for restaurant closures:

According to Inside Scoop, conjoined-twin restaurants Marzano and Garibaldi's (5356 College, Oakland) have closed, to reopen as a single new restaurant named Hudson. The original Marzano and the San Francisco branch of Garibaldi's both remain open and under the same ownership.

Eater SF says that Country Cheese on Divisadero and Fell is closed, forced out by the landlord. The owner may try to reopen somewhere else. (Haighteration reported on the story in November.)

Chowhound earns first-scoop rights (which Eater confirmed) for reporting on the closing of the cafe at Emporio Armani (1 Grant).

Yesterday's only good news, it seems, came from SFoodie ― we reported on the arrival of Gaumenkitzel (2121 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley, 510-388-1594, www.gaumenkitzel.net), a North German bakery and restaurant, set to open later this month.
