SFoodie's roundup of tips, news, and rants from the week in animal-free eats.

  • Exciting news, there's a new Loving Hut coming to the Inner Sunset! Loving Hut is a Supreme Master Ching Hai joint, meaning it may or may not be run by a cult. I mainly don't care as I have a steady resolve when it comes to cults.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Fancy, huh?
Unless, of course, they offer me a cement floor to sleep on and a bowl of rice a day, and then, I'm in! That said, Loving Hut's vegan menu is all over the place, from traditional Vietnamese to spaghetti and meatballs, so there's something for everyone. Get your eating pants on because they should be open by the end of this week, or early next.
  • The next San Francisco Vegan Bakesale date was announced! It's Dec. 18 at a TBD location in the Mission. Can you bake without eggs and butter? Yes you can! Holler at your girl via and show me what you got. You can make anything from cookies to cakes to brownies, to man, I can't think of any other types of baked goods. Well, you're certainly more creative than I, so go crazy! The bakesale will benefit MicaCoo (bird rescue!) and Muttville (senior dog rescue!) and they're both awesome, so let's make it happen, cap'n.
  • We told you about Souley Vegan's brunch (it's SO GOOD) and it just so happens that right down the road, Donut Farm recently started offering vegan brunch. It's served every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with just one option that changes weekly. It's typical vegan brunch fare: hash browns, tofu scrambles, mushroom medley, sausages, and more.

Plus, there's doughnuts, cupcakes, and whoopie pies. Q: What's brunch without a whoopie pie? A: THE WORST.
  • Remember when those 500,000 eggs were recalled a month ago? Well, those farms are already back in action! Don't worry, though, I'm sure they've cleaned up their acts. Or not. Who knows, who cares. Certainly not the farms, the USDA, or the FDA. Food safety in this country is such a joke, I honestly think a group of fifth graders could do a better job. In fact, let's approach the FDA with that, they might be open to it. Less work for them!
  • The Humane Society of the United States get shiz done for animals. That's just a fact. This week they released video from a factory farm in Texas owned by Cal-Maine, one of the nation's leading egg producers. Unfortunately, the video wasn't chickens running around and taking dust baths and frolicking with kittens and puppies. Boo! Instead, it was birds trapped in cages, unable to get to food and water, massive overcrowding, and eggs covered in blood and feces. Eat up, America!
  • South Bay nonprofit The Food Empowerment Project has an excellent essay up about the globalization of factory farms. The gist: The West's appetite for meat is spreading, and fast. With China, India, and South America being settled by the likes of Tyson and McDonald's, it's only a matter of time before the entire world is eating hamburgers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It sucks that growing wealth equates with an influx of crap American fast food. Even scarier is this factory farm map from Food and Water Watch. Entire states run red with factory farms, except Alaska, where it's too cold to do anything but warm Sarah Palin's heart. Zing! The map is terrible news to pretty much everyone with the exception of five really wealthy dudes and Scott Walker, the new governor of Wisconsin, who wants to grant huge tax cuts to factory farms effective immediately. Man, Wisconsin, what's up? First kicking out Feingold and now this!? I don't want to be friends anymore; I don't care how good your beer is!
  • Finally, Roo the two-legged chihuahua was adopted! Yay, Roo! She's moving in to a 200-acre spot in Malibu, where she'll spend her days getting high with Woody Harrelson and giving Jennifer Aniston advice on her love life (date someone age appropriate, lady!)
