Burma Cafe Adds to Daly City's Diversity
While we're still mourning the loss of Yellow Pa Taut in SOMA, we're happy to report that a new Burmese place has been born just a few miles south, in Daly City. Burma Cafe recently opened its doors in the St. Francis Square shopping center, which is just a few blocks west of Serramonte. Previously, D.C.'s Burmese fans had to make do with the lone restaurant in this area, Little Yangon, known mainly for low-cost meals. With its beautiful modern interior, Burma Cafe is a big improvement.

It not only adds to the increasing diversity of cuisine in Daly City (which celebrates its centennial on Mar. 22), but also to the wider area's Burmese scene. There are currently only half a dozen Burmese restaurants in San Francisco: Burma SuperStar, Mandalay , Burmese Kitchen, the duo of Pagan and Bagan, and B*Star Bar, though that last one could be considered Asian fusion.
Burma Café's menu has the usual offerings: tea leaf salad, Burmese samosas, nan gyi dok (curry chicken noodles), moo hin nag (catfish chowder), samosa soup, garlic noodles, curries, etc. Sadly, we weren't able to sample anything, since the restaurant was closed for a private party when we stopped by. Several early dinners have praised the Burmese samosas, the pork curry for its use delectable pork belly, and the watermelon kiwi lemonade, a drink special.
Burma Cafe is currently only open for dinner. Lunch service starts next month.
