Revolutionary Desserts Wanted for Thursday's 18 Reasons DIY Sweets Social

​No, you can't bring chocolate chip cookies to Thursday's drop-in DIY dessert social at 18 Reasons. Well, you can, but you'll only shame yourself ― the Mission art/community/whatever space is devoting tomorrow's 18th Hour event to revolution, a nod to Matt Stewart's San Francisco novel The French Revolution (Soft Skull Press, $15.95). A Chron review noted Stewart's "priceless send-ups of the extravagances of San Francisco food culture: 'squid truffle paste, cherry-apple-pork-chop marmalade, goose neck-onion goulash brewed with platinum flakes.'" And while we'd love to see the horror on the faces of the 18 Reasons staff if folks brought platters of squid-ink thumbprint cookies and lard panna cotta to sweat under the lights, we should note that you're encouraged to limit your face-melting creativity to the sweets realm. "We invite slightly more traditional takes on the classics," 18 Reasons suggests in the event description. "But only slightly." Punking out? Pretty much. Anyway, Stewart himself will judge the entries, along with Bi-Rite Creamery's Natalie Luney and Eat the Love blogger and pie master Irvin Lin.
