S.F. Dishes Up Giants Ice Cream Tributes
Not to be outdone by local bartenders, San Francisco ice cream makers have also gotten into the Giants spirit. Mitchell's Ice Cream opened in 1953, one year before the Giants last won the World Series and five years before the team moved to San Francisco. Mitchell's has been serving the Baseball Nut sundae since Oct. 3, when the Giants clinched their division. Along with the usual sundae ingredients of two scoops (your choice), hot fudge, and whipped cream, the Baseball Nut adds orange sprinkles and walnuts. What's so special about walnuts? The daughter of founder Larry Mitchell, Linda Mitchell (she is to local ice cream what Willie Mays is to Giants baseball) tells SFoodie the shop typically tops with peanuts or almonds only, never walnuts. Just like the Giants have a lot of new fans, Mitchell says, she thought it'd be fun to add some new nuts. Could they be bringing the team luck? Maybe. Or could the Giants' success derive from the fact that Mitchell's employees are allowed to wear Giants gear throughout the Series? ![]()

At newcomer Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, owner Ian Flores (more Brian Wilson than Willie Mays) was recently rocking the orange and black headwear.
A closer look revealed that his lid was from The Hundreds, a local skate shop. It's the colors that count, Flores argues. To back that up, he and partner Anabelle Topacio have brought back Ballpark, their long-lost inaugural "it" flavor made with Anchor Steam, studded with chocolate-covered pretzels and peanuts. Flores hopes to make a batch every day until the Series concludes. More into quidditch than baseball? Humphry Slocombe introduced Butterbeer ice cream Tuesday. It's made with browned butter and Sierra Nevada. ![]()
